History

  • Gomismta was used by shepherds living in Guria and Adjara for summer grazing. The pastures belonged to the monastery of the Creator. Here goods were brought from Chvanistskali gorge. They paid a fee for the sheep, grated cheese and bread. According to legend, the shepherd Tumanov came to Gomismta with his daughter obsessed with incurable disease, who was healed there. The place where the resort of Gomisma later appeared was called Napatskhvari. Around it there are places Kharitaghi, Tskhemli Yaila, Shua Yaila. In 1902, there were about 20 houses and three shops in Napatskhvari. The number of vacationers exceeded 200. Someone will hold a free performance and concert for Gigineishvili.

  • In 1931, Filipe Makharadze went to the resort and visited it, and then his delegation went on horseback to Bakhmaro. The delegation from Bakhmaro took a specialist doctor to study the features of the resort on Gomismata. World War II hampered the development of infrastructure on the Gomis Mountains. The construction of the resort resumed after the war. The road from Ozurgeti to Gomismta was built in 1955. At that time, there were about 500 holiday cottages on Gomismata and an average of 4500-5000 tourists visited every year. By 1970, the number of houses was 1,000, and the number of vacationers was 7-8 thousand. A club, a medical center and a pharmacy were set up in the 1970s. By the 1980s, there were already 1,500 holiday cottages on Gomismata, but no plumbing, electricity, or transportation were provided. In 1991 there was an attempt to lay off electricity.
