Ajameti Sanctuary - (formerly Ajameti State Reserve) - a sanctuary in the Imereti region, 15 km from Kutaisi. Founded in 1935, the area is 4848 ha. It is composed of two arrays: Ajameti oak (3742 ha, left tributaries of the river Rioni - between Kvirila and Khanistskali) and Vartsikhe array (1106 ha, on the left side of Khanistskali).
- The relic forests of the Colchian type Imereti oak are preserved in the Ajameti reserve (the age of the oaks varies between 120-200 years), the sacred groves of the Caucasian Dzelkvi (1.5 ha) and also the Hartvisi oak. Other forest species are also represented in the Ajameti State Reserve: ash, Caucasian hornbeam, field maple, panta, tamel. The most common of the Kheti varieties are yale and hawthorn, which in some places form impassable raka. Among the mammals found in Ajameti State Reserve are roe deer, fox, white marten, badger, rabbit, squirrel. Of the birds, the forest chicken is noteworthy. The main purpose of the Ajameti Sanctuary is the protection, reproduction and scientific study of the Kolkheti forest specimen and the Tertiary Imereti oak, Hartvis oak, Dzelkvi as well as fauna. Ajameti Reserve is a unique natural monument of Georgia.
- Ajameti Reserve is located 230 km from Tbilisi and 15 km from Kutaisi, in Baghdati and Zestaponi districts, on the Rioni plain and consists of Ajameti, Vartsikhe and Sviri districts. In 1928, 20 ha of Kutaisi forest part was declared a reserve, and in 1935, the Ajameti Botanical Reserve was established on the basis of the Ajameti forest massif. Ajameti was established as a state reserve in 1946 and its purpose was to preserve rare relics - Imereti oak and Dzelkvi. The famous oak of Ajameti is very old. Some trees are over 250 years old.
